Ignite children's enthusiasm for coding, robotics, and engineering at a young age when learners are naturally curious about their surroundings. This workshop will focus on the introduction and integration of developmentally appropriate robotics and coding tools within early childhood education, promoting an engaging and enriching learning environment.
Outline
We will begin with a Padlet and/or small group discussion where participants share their own experiences with coding and robotics with early learners. The presenter will try to engage reluctant teachers with ideas and positivity that little learners are capable of engaging in computational thinking. (10 minutes) We will then discuss the importance of developing computational thinking as foundational skills when students are young, and creating developmentally appropriate opportunities for students to experience coding and robotics. A simple hands-on coding game will be introduced for participants to engage in. This will get them up and moving and interacting with one another. (10 min) The presenter will then introduce the KIBO robot, which is a screen-free robot designed for young learners. There will be robots available for participants to work with and interact with during the session. A simple introductory lesson will be introduced, and then participants will be asked to work in small groups to design and complete a code. (20 min) After participants have engaged with and experienced KIBO, the presenter will share additional examples, ideas and resources for using KIBO in their classrooms. This will include access to resources from KIBO and their robotics curriculum designed for PK-2nd grade students. (10 minutes) There will be more time to explore the robots and/or a Q&A session with the presenter. (10 minutes)
