8 Things You Can Do with OctoStudio: Getting Started with Creative Coding
Wednesday, July 2, 2025 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM · 1 hr. (America/Chicago)
Interactive Session
Computer Science and Computational Thinking
Information
OctoStudio is a new mobile coding app for creating interactive projects, developed by the inventors of Scratch. Learn to create projects that support creativity, literacy, and physical activity! We'll try out a range of features and share inspiring examples from learners and educators around the world.
Outline
Part One: Introduction to OctoStudio (10 min)
Part Two: 8 Interactive demonstrations that participants will have the opportunity to try out on their own. (30 min)
Part Three: Discussion on how educators can implement OctoStudio in their own learning spaces (10 min)
Part Four: Accessing Resources on creative coding (10 min)
Supporting research
OctoStudio is based on decades of research on the design of creative coding environments to support creative learning (Resnick, 2017). OctoStudio builds on extensive international research on students' motivation and learning through creating projects with Scratch, enabling them to become computational creators and develop computational thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills (Rusk & Resnick, 2022). OctoStudio is the result of iterative design-based research with community-based educators in Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa, Uganda, the U.S., and other countries around the world (Rusk, Jain, & Martin, 2023, ISLS; Rusk et al., in press, Learning, Media, and Technology). The approach of this session is grounded in research on the importance of learners to be able to express their interests and identities with computing to motivate and sustain meaningful learning, especially for learners from groups who have been historically marginalized (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine 2021; 2024).
