Information

Newcomer students bring rich cultural and linguistic assets to the classroom, yet often face barriers to communication and collaboration. This session explores how teaching AI literacy can empower newcomer students to overcome language barriers, build confidence, and engage in meaningful collaboration with peers.
Participants will learn how newcomer students can use AI tools—such as real-time translation, guided prompts, and structured supports—to express ideas, preserve their voice, and participate more fully in academic conversations. The session highlights how AI can help students not only access content, but also connect with others, find common ground, and contribute to group learning experiences.
Grounded in classroom practice, this session also demonstrates how students can use AI to support teamwork by organizing ideas, sharing responsibilities, and increasing participation in collaborative tasks. Educators will leave with practical strategies to scaffold AI use for multilingual learners, helping them move from language limitation to active engagement and belonging in the classroom community.
