Information

AI is already in our classrooms but are students and teachers equipped to lead with it, or just react to it? This session explores the critical difference between AI use and AI agency, and why that distinction defines student success in the modern workforce.
Drawing from original research on responsible AI implementation across Houston-area districts and HISD's student-centered Career Exploration program, presenters will demonstrate how intentional design builds the agency that passive exposure never can. Research shows that AI without structure decreases independent performance and deeper learning, the same pattern seen in career exploration when exposure replaces identity development. HISD's Career Exploration framework offers a replicable model: when students and teachers are equipped with structured tools, clear frameworks, and space for reflection, they stop being consumers of experience and become authors of their own direction. Participants will leave with practical strategies to build agency — in careers, in classrooms, and in the age of AI.
